Olive Vox Goes Under The Probe

Comprised of brothers Parker James and Caden Shea, Dallas, Texas psych-grunge duo Olive Vox is a true family affair. Isolating with one another during the pandemic, they took the lockdown and made lemonade out of lemons – going into the lab and emerging with a full band sound that melds fuzzed-out psychedelic guitar-rock with ‘90s alternative.

Their latest single, “Sunflower,” captures what Olive Vox does best: holding a funhouse mirror to late 20th-century rock and reflecting their enthusiastic interpretation back at us. There isn’t one particular sound or band from the era they sound exactly like, instead Olive Vox evokes the time itself, injecting it with Gen Z exuberance. The acoustic strums and electric wails of “Sunflower” illustrate this point by joyfully straddling the line between pop and rock, creating a song that’s immediately catchy while retaining a tough exterior. Parker James’ vocals manage to marry the swagger of Oasis’ Liam Gallagher with the ragged, thread-bare screams of Cobain, hitting all the right notes in their ‘90s potpourri.

“Sunflower” follows the winning blueprint of their earlier releases “Bury Me Low,” a sludgy pastiche to ‘90s alternative rock, and “Finger,” a fuzzed-out cover of the influential Ty Seagull. Behind the strength of these singles, and their sizable social media influence (the band has nearly twelve thousand TikTok followers), these promising fuzz acolytes are a show you won’t want to miss.

Music Fiends caught up with Olive Vox before they hit the road to put them under The Probe:

1) If there was a time machine and you could travel back to anywhere at any point in time, where/when would it be and why?

Parker: I would go back in time to a Nirvana concert, get front row seats because they were only on road for a few years.

Caden: I would travel back to 1970’s because I would be able to see some of my favorite rock legends in concert.

2) What’s your favorite conspiracy theory?

Parker: The Moon Landing

Caden: I like the one about the Pyramids of Egypt. That they were built by aliens.

3) What’s an embarrassing moment you’ve had where you just wanted to disappear on the spot?

Caden: I accidentally let out the longest & loudest burp at one of my favorite restaurants ..it echoed and I was so embarrassed that I won’t even go back.

Parker: I was at a School of Rock show and I was given a Queen song to learn last minute that was completely out of my range. I just froze on stage with a bunch of parents with their phones out and I didn’t sing from start to finish.

4) Tell us something your parents grounded you for when you were a kid?

Parker: They took my X-Box away for an hour lol ..I can’t remember why but it was probably because I pushed Caden.

Caden: I’ve had my phone taken away for a few days because I was talking back, nothing too crazy :0

5) What music are you listening to lately?

Parker: I’ve been listening to a lot of Indie rock, some punk.

Caden: I’ve been listening to My Bloody Valentine, Weezer and always Cage the Elephant ..a lot of underground artists as well.
